VICTORY FOR THE VALLEY

The long awaited list of LRP Offers to Contract was announced today and wpd Canada Ltd. did not make the cut. We spent a lot of time and energy presenting our information to the LRP (Large Renewable Project) people in Toronto. We created court worthy documentation of each land owner and leaseholder in the vicinity of the proposed industrial acreage.

We only addressed, or proposed to address, issues that were quantifiable and objective.

We kept reminding them of our major concerns throughout the process and did not let up after the Applications were in. We did a lot of sharing with the general public and with area Municipalities. We spoke to land owners and business owners and recorded their positions.

We financed our own Geological study to be prepared for Court Injunctions.

We made sure to clarify that the area in question was not the Unorganized Temiskaming West with a population of 2600 that included over 20 other unorganized townships over 100 kilometers to the north of the two little areas in question. (knowing that the turbine companies were trying to use the census designation so that our non supporting group of landowners (150 out of 200 or so) would be considered against the entire census block making it appear that only 150 out of 2600 or so residents were against the industrialization of the valley.

(sneaky, eh)

We started a serious engineering review of the formula used to extrapolate wind energy at heights well over the height allowed for the wind measuring towers. Last fall one of the several Engineering Associations came out against the formula (created and used by the people who had the most to gain by wind energy numbers being high) (conflict of interest I would think).

So in order to be able to keep the area free of industry on our little slice of Crown Land we will pursue other Ministry avenues open to us like the Ontario Crown Land Use Policy Atlas, the Living Legacy Fund and UNESCO World Heritage status.

Our job is well under way and there is still much to do but, for today at least, I will relax and enjoy the results of our group effort. I was always grateful to live here and, as this experience unfolded, became even more grateful as i worked with my neighbours and friends to ensure the respectful treatment of our home.

The Silver Center town site, a place I loved to go picking apples (if I could beat the bears) and rose hips, was once a thriving town built literally on top of the silver mines that yielded great wealth from Silver but also terrible sickness from the Arsenic and other toxic metals.

From the beginning of this attempt to again crack open the earth and unleash the poisons within, I have felt the Spirit of the area supporting me. The White Bald Eagle Feather gifted to me when I thought I could not go on, the wonderful friends I have made and the Respect we have demanded for this part of the Earth have made my "hardest year ever" also my most rewarding.

Thanks to everyone from

Little Bear from the Bush
